Affirmation Art Studio is my weekly online open studio. Spending an hour with positive affirmations and creativity really feels like a balm to the soul, and I love being able to connect with my creative community.

What is this studio about? Affirmations are encouraging and supportive statements. They are the words we need to hear, especially in tough times. Maybe you have seen affirmation card decks before - now is your opportunity to design your own artwork around these words! Each week we will focus on a different affirmation statement and you have time to respond to creative prompts. This isn't toxic positivity - we recognize the complexity of our emotional world. Always speaking positively and looking on the bright side can be invalidating and eye-roll inducing. Sometimes, affirmations sound like "this sucks" and "it is ok to be scared and sad". There is room for all sorts of affirmations here.

I want to share more about affirmation art here on the blog for anyone who is unable to come to the open studio. So, each month I will be choosing one affirmation to post with journalling and art prompts. And since this is something new, this month's affirmation will celebrate trying new things!

July Affirmation: I am brave enough to try something new.

Everything you know and do now was once new. It takes courage to navigate the world. Children do this every day - trying new sports, learning new words, meeting new classmates, but sometimes as adults we forget that we have the resilience to face new challenges. Perfectionism tells us that we have to get everything right the first time we try it and this can lead to us making our world smaller and smaller until it only contains the things we already know we can do. Use this affirmation to remind yourself that you can try new things!

Journalling Prompt

Reflect on the courage you showed as a kid when doing something new. What is something that once felt scary or difficult that you have now mastered?

Art Prompt

Try something new with art! Draw something you’ve never drawn before. Get out the paints that have been gathering dust. Hold your marker the “wrong” way. Remind yourself that it is ok to not be “good” at something right away. Use art as practice for trying new things in your daily life.

Recommended materials: paper, markers, paints, coloured pencils, any art supplies you haven’t tried before!
