A really cool thing about moving back home is that I got to go through all of the art I have made the last few years in Vancouver ✂️🎨

I found this collage piece that I made 2 years ago when my brother bought a house in my mom’s hometown. I was so excited for him and also felt so tender and sad at the same time. It felt like I was lagging behind, that I was missing things back home and people were moving on without me. My heart lived in two places at once: in Vancouver with my art therapy community and at home with my family.

Now that I am back home, I am settling in to the rhythms of a slower, rural life again. Something I deeply missed. And now, my heart misses the accessibility of the city, the ease of bumping into friends and neighbours and the vibrant cuisines.

I am reminded that life is a constant balance of pleasure, grief, joy, longing, tension and calm. I have gone back to my roots, yet a place doesn’t make you who you are.

Connor @birchwoodarttherapy and I were talking about rootedness and the idea for an art therapy group formed. We want to explore: in times of uncertainty and change, what is it that keeps us rooted? What if you were able to come back to yourself, your values, your community and what really matters to you?

We want to let art and nature guide us back home to ourselves. Our newest cozy online art therapy group ROOTED begins November 2. If this sounds like what you need, come join us for this heart-filled offering 🍂

My 1 month sabbatical is officially over and I’m heading back to work seeing BC and Ontario clients online! Settling into a new adventure in an old place. All is not figured out yet, but all is well.

My 1 month sabbatical is officially over and I’m heading back to work seeing BC and Ontario clients online! Settling into a new adventure in an old place. All is not figured out yet, but all is well.

🌞 it’s the last weekend of my 20s ✨🪩

I got to spend some time out in nature with wonderful friends and I’m also cleaning and packing to prepare for a big, big move.

Moving isn’t new to me. I moved away from home at 18 and just kept moving - first to England, then Kingston Ontario, then finally Vancouver.

I’ve been here for the majority of my 20s and have learned some incredible life lessons. The biggest one being: hyper-independence keeps me stuck and isolated from community. I learned to ask for help, how to be vulnerable and how to speak compassionately to myself here.

Someone asked me a few years ago how I had done so much at such a young age: I had a masters degree and started my business at 24, I was fully on my own in my studio at 27 and started teaching grad school classes at 28. And the truth is that I missed out on a lot of experiences because I felt like I needed to prove myself. I was always the helper, not the helped - not because I didn’t need help, but because I always hid behind a veneer of “I know it all”.

Something shifted in the past few years and I started to lean more into intuition, play, rest and authenticity. I didn’t want work to be my whole life and I started leaning into my friendships, community and hobbies.

I genuinely do not know what my future holds. I have done almost no planning, or applied to jobs or figured out where I am going to live. My childhood home is a soft landing place for now. I’m trying to remind myself that I don’t have to know everything and do everything for myself. That returning to your roots is not failing or giving up. That my knowledge, planning and workflow is not what defines me. I’d rather be defined by my presence, the way I love and laugh and play.

If my 20s was focused on “doing”, let my 30s focus on simply “being”.

I am making art, climbing mountains, swimming in rivers, teaching, loving, being.

One more month in this beautiful place I have called home for so many years. What’s next will come when it comes. For now, I am here.

A poem for a new beginning 🤍

Very very soon I venture out into a liminal space of my own making. On Saturday, I hand over the keys for my studio. In August, I turn 30 and move back home to live in community with my family. For the 3 months in-between: sunshine and beach and swimming and relief and release and love and grief and joy and curiosity and whimsy and wonder and what it feels like to be alive and free in the last months of your 20s.

First, there is one last vision boarding working tomorrow evening if you would like to come collage with me ✂️

Opening my studio, caring for it and welcoming people into it was a pleasure and a joy. It was authentic action aligned with my values as a therapist.

But closing my studio over this past month has been so beautiful and meaningful. So much love has been poured into this space in the last few weeks as I say goodbye to my clients. We have laughed and cried and shared our wishes and dreams for the future.

I am so thankful to have these weeks to intentionally move into the next phase of my life. I am so thankful I got to support so many people here over the last 3 years. And that love, play and curiosity became cornerstones of my process.

Well, it’s been a weird and full few weeks navigating a lot of changes and preparing for my transition to online work.

We finished the Art of Self Love therapy group and will be beginning the very last in-person studio group next week.

I played in a ukulele performance after taking lessons for a year. I tried a tufting workshop and went to the Banksy exhibition.

I finished my taxes and starting reviewing my syllabus for teaching this summer.

Everything is normal and nothing is normal because I constantly have in my head “this might be the last time …” which is always always bittersweet.

This month I have accidentally broken some of my favourite ceramic pieces. I took each moment as an opportunity to practice non-attachment. A sign from the universe. A relief that I will not have to choose if I want to take it with me or sell it or give it away.

But I think non-attachment to this place, my studio, my neighborhood will be much harder. I designed my upcoming group new beginnings with myself in mind. What have I needed in the past when making a change? Acknowledgement, a place for my fear, my grief and my excitement. A place to let go, to feel empowered to transform.

I’m looking forward to this new group and my last 2 months here. After all, everything good in my life came from a new beginning. You have to be willing to change for good things to flourish.

My ✨ authentic vision board ✨ for 2025.

I ran so many vision boarding workshops in January and I never ended up creating something that I felt accurately represented what I wanted my year to look like.

I focused a lot on turning 30 and how I wanted to feel in the transition to a new decade, but the biggest transition would be moving home to be with my family. I wasn’t ready to share this yet in January and so my true authentic vision was not coming through in my art.

When I realized this, I sat down with @tiffany_embracetherapy and we collaged together, sitting in the grief and excitement of new beginnings.

I have lived away from home for 11 years, moving out for school when I was 18 and coming back only for a few months every summer. I don’t know what it will look like when I move back but I do know that I want to go slow and easy and be in the ebb and flow of liminal space.

Thank you to everyone who sent me messages of encouragement and support and kind words around this transition. Thanks for believing in my vision ♥️

Paying attention to the small moments when everything feels so big right now. Playing with expansion and contraction. Practicing perspective.

Well, it’s 2 weeks into January and here I am. I’ve been mostly staying off social media because it was feeding into a mindset that wasn’t feeling good for me. A pressure to keep up, set big goals, and make sure everything is in place to have a successful year. A few days into 2025 and I was already feeling behind.

Perfectionism is a fixed mindset. It says “I need to do everything perfectly in order to be valued”. It leaves no room for growth and failure.

I want to shift from these limiting beliefs. Not looking at my work last year as a metric that I need to grow exponentially, but as a reminder of what is possible when I trust the process and check in with myself about what feels authentic to me. I want to give myself recognition for what I have done without expectations that I need to do it again and again. So here’s a little look back at 2024!

🌞 I saw 75 clients over 396 individual appointments.

💐 We ran 13 groups/workshops with 71 clients. I hosted a weekly open studio and truly don’t know how many people walked into the studio to learn how to weave.

🍎 I taught 2 classes, exploring group art therapy and studio art with 12 students.

👩🏻‍🏫 2 of these students help me run my groups/workshops and I get to practice mentorship. It’s so cool to watch them learn and grow.

I feel like I learn this lesson time and time again: you can’t do everything.

I am curious about so many things and as a solo practitioner, I can go down any avenue I want. But it doesn’t mean I should - pushing myself to do it all only ever ends with my body and spirit being undernourished as my brain works overtime.

There is a reflection tool that I use at the end of my groups called Rock Stick Leaf. We talk about what rocked, what will stick with you and what you want to leave behind.

🪨Running a 12-week creative group rocked this year.

🌲Supervising my practicum students and watching them grow their confidence will stick with me.

🍃 And in the new year I want to leave behind trying to do everything all the way and all at once.

Ease is allowed. Anything worth doing is worth finding the easier way to do.

eyes away from the computer, I notice the light streaming through my window. I turn to look out the window and notice the wind outside. Panning the room, I see my cat and feel a rush of love as she contentedly naps. I get up to give her a soft pat. While up, I slide on my slippers and step outside to briefly feel the wind on my face.

this moment is mere minutes but it feeds my soul and I feel lighter as I return to work. What if everyday I can be so gentle with myself?

During co-working this morning, I started planning out all of the groups and workshops for the new year. I might even do a holiday craft studio to end the year with even more community!

I’ve been playing a lot recently - weaving with new colours, using different tools, running my hands through the sand, watching the paint spread across a page. This may seem counterintuitive to what I have posted recently, but I see it as essential. When we are angry about the state of the world, we need to stay connected to our inherent why.

I am angry because I want all people to be able to live a life free of oppression. I want us to be free to play and live with ease. I want to be free from the narrative that we always have to be using our time “productively” in service of capitalist and colonialist structures.

Making art and playing is an act of resistance in a world that wants to suppress our imagination. Making a mess, taking up space on a page, doing something when we have never done it before, trying new things without instructions, giving ourselves time to rest - these things all make a difference.

They connect us to who we are. They connect us to hope. They offer us the capacity to imagine a brighter future and continue to stand up against injustices.

I created my women’s retreat around these exact topics. We’ll talk about why you’re stuck, what we can do about it and how to make space for yourself.

You’ll leave with a belly full of good food, a package of information and inspiration, messy hands and an empowered sense of self. You are deserving of a joyful and easeful life. Let’s reimagine the world together 👩🏻‍🎨♥️

🌞 feeling really good lately 🌞

When clients come to me for burnout recovery, I always tell them that it is a slow process. The initial fear and anxiety about slowing down can feel so hard and changing your inner narrative around productivity takes a long time.

I know what it feels like to always put in 110% in work/school and then feel like I can’t take care of myself in other avenues of life. For me, this looked like shopping (even when I didn’t need new clothes - I just wanted the appearance that I had it all together), getting takeout constantly (always being too tired to cook or grocery shop), drinking coffee and alcohol (even when I knew that these drinks didn’t feel good in my body) and living in a really messy home (I was always too overwhelmed to tidy and only cleaning when people were coming over - i.e. I could never enjoy my home unless I had someone to please). My anxiety was so high from a fear of being judged by others, so I always said yes to anything that was asked of me, even when I couldn’t quite fit it into my schedule.

I’ve spent 4 years trying to unlearn cycles of capitalist productivity, consumerism and people pleasing. I wanted to understand myself outside of these systems. I got really clear on my values and how I wanted to spend my time, energy and money.

This post is prompted by the spontaneous trip I took to Vancouver island. I used to travel there when I needed to escape my “real life”, but this trip felt different. I didn’t need to escape anything and I didn’t need to pretend. I haven’t had a drink in a year, or coffee in over 2 years. I have purchased only 4 items of clothing in the last 2 years and decluttered my home. I look forward to grocery shopping and have the energy to cook again.

These were the choices that were right for me. I don’t think there is any one correct path for everyone. The changes that I made were sometimes difficult and challenged me. It gets so much harder before it gets better, but I am so much happier now than when I was run-down and trying to keep up appearances.

If you are stuck in that place of overwork and exhaustion and fear of being judged, I want to share that it can get better 🤍

My clients come in and say that they don’t feel like they will ever measure up to the idea of themselves in their head. I empathize with the feeling of anxiety that surrounds them. They struggle with finding flow in tasks when they could always be optimizing the system, making themselves faster, better.

I used to feel this way too. I have spent a year tenderly considering this topic and I notice something different about myself now. A settling and acceptance of exactly who I am in this moment of time.

I am soon wrapping up a 3.5 week holiday from work.
Usually I would have spent a good portion of my holiday doing work tasks. Instead, I have spent only a few hours doing the bare necessity to keep my business running while I am gone. The hovering anxiety that accompanies the end of a holiday isn’t there anymore. Just contentedness that this is enough.

I will not regret flying to Halifax to finally visit my childhood best friend. I will not regret saying yes to seeing a musical with my mom. I will not regret the roadtrip to Georgian Bay to help my friend prepare for her new baby.

I will not regret doing the tedious tasks required to help my cousin prepare for her wedding and then dancing all night and singing so loud that I lost my voice. I will not regret snuggling my childhood cat, and my friend’s cat, and my brothers’ cats (I think that is 9 cats in total!).

I will not regret baking my brother’s birthday cake. I will not regret saying yes to learning to play disc golf in a bright and beautiful forest. I will not regret slowness and softness and quietness and light.

There is more to life than being the best you can be. If your barometer for enoughness keeps changing after you have reached a certain milestone, then you will never feel like you are enough. What would happen if we replaced the words “you are not good enough yet” with “maybe you are enough already”?

I will not regret flying to Halifax to finally visit my childhood best friend. I will not regret saying yes to seeing a musical with my mom. I will not regret the roadtrip to Georgian Bay to help my friend prepare for her new baby.

I will not regret doing the tedious tasks required to help my cousin prepare for her wedding and then dancing all night and singing so loud that I lost my voice. I will not regret snuggling my childhood cat, and my friend’s cat, and my brothers’ cats (I think that is 9 cats in total!).

I will not regret baking my brother’s birthday cake. I will not regret saying yes to learning to play disc golf in a bright and beautiful forest. I will not regret slowness and softness and quietness and light.

There is more to life than being the best you can be. If your barometer for enoughness keeps changing after you have reached a certain milestone, then you will never feel like you are enough. What would happen if we replaced the words “you are not good enough yet” with “maybe you are enough already”?

The couch where people come to find themselves ✨

Each time someone comes to sit on my couch, I wonder what will learn. The understanding, growth and “ah-ha!” moments that have happened here sometimes give me goosebumps. In helping others know themselves better piece-by-piece, I wonder if we can EVER fully be “known”.

I’ve been known as a lot of things in my life. A hardworking student, a supportive friend, a good sister, a competitive (and sometimes overbearing) game-player. I’ve also been known as “the wicked witch”, a messy roommate, an annoying know-it-all.

You can’t always control how people perceive you, but isn’t it so tempting to try?

In this online space for my business, I want to be known as confident, inspiring, funny, consistent and relatable. So this year when I haven’t been spending as much time in this online space, I felt a tug of shame that I wasn’t showing up in a way that matched previous years. I have an idea in my head that when you are “known” or perceived in a certain way, you never stray from that. I wasn’t giving myself a lot of room for unknowns.

Unknowns are scary and it is much easier to simply put things in a labelled box. But unknowns also offer so much richness.

New knowledge is always going to unfold. One day you will eat a new fruit, or go to a new place, or look at something in a different way or take a different path and a new layer of understanding will be available to you. What was previously unknown becomes seamlessly woven into the fabric of your life.

My life looks pretty different from how it looked last year, and I’m glad for that. I feel much more ready to face unknowns and let myself be perceived as messy and imperfect.

One thing I would like to bring back however is my writing practice, newsletter and studio groups! In all the unknowns, it always feels helpful to write things down. The vision boards I made in January were all focused on this summer. About passing through portals of opportunity and opening myself up to playful exploration.

On my birthday, the ocean tide surged in way faster than expected and swept my phone away. Other beachgoers helped me collect my belongings and dug my phone out of the sand. I felt this sense of clarity and confidence wash over me. I have been practicing my ability to go with the flow - in this case the ocean flow - and I knew that I needed to simply take each moment as it came. It felt like the ocean was sending me a message to let go, live in the present and trust myself to keep doing what is right for me.

I’m really interested to see what the rest of the summer will look like. On the autumn equinox (sept 21), I am hosting another vision boarding workshop. Saying goodbye to summer, reflecting on growth and setting intentions for the months (or years) to come.

Intrinsic Therapy is 4 years old 🤍🤍🤍

4 years in and I feel like I’ve got it figured out.

It’s not that running a business is easy … it is that it is work that I know I can do. Solving problems, applying new knowledge, creating a plan, checking things off a to-do list. Long years in school really prepared me for these things - and long years of not paying attention to my needs really burned me out.

What I am most proud of is that I have learned to take care of myself well. There have been many ups and downs in the past few years which shook my sense of self. This was a year of coming home to myself and clarifying my values and priorities. When my business anniversary came up, I was at home sleeping and cooking and cleaning after a few pretty stressful weeks.

I thought that maybe I should go to my studio and celebrate my work anniversary in the business that I built, and realized that the business I built is not contained by four walls. The business that I built is focused on rest and recovery and fluidity and creative freedom. What a better way to honour this business than to take a break to care for myself?

Intrinsic Therapy has been my soul work for the past 4 years and I am so curious to see how it shifts and evolves as I continuously learn that caring for myself is the most important element to caring for my business, my clients and my studio 🤍

Last week we were at the emergency vet until 4 am.

I didn’t know what was happening, all I knew was that my sweet cat was very sick and I was all alone. I paced around the waiting room and eventually asked the receptionist if I could borrow paper and a pen. I sat sketching the nearby plant for over an hour, calming myself down through lines and shapes. When it felt like there was nothing more I could do than just wait and worry, I turned to art.

When we feel helpless, turning to something that brings back a sense of agency helps to regain hopefulness. To be hopeful means to acknowledge that bad things exist and we have agency to make changes (even if the change is very small).

I’ve been teaching this semester and continually emphasize the role of hope in healing. As an art therapist, it is my role to help you transform your experience through art. To find the hope in the abyss.

Eventually the veterinarian came to talk to me and assured me that Nim would be ok. We left with antibiotics and a long-acting opioid and a soft cone. All week I have been so tired, my body still feeling the effects of a long, anxious night. We’re both slowly healing from the experience and I am reminded how much time healing can take. In the meantime I’ll keep turning to art, turning to art, turning to art.

ok the next paper flower workshop is sometime in June! I need some time to figure it out. We’ll make
simple beginner-friendly peonies, and then I might have another workshop for more advanced/sophisticated coral charm peonies. Still easy enough for beginners but requires a lot more patience since they are large flowers with a lot of intricacies.

If you love peonies like me, learning to make your own bouquet by hand is such a fun experience that brings so much beauty and joy into the day-to-day. I mean, I can’t resist farmer’s market flowers, but it’s nice to have an everlasting bouquet on hand when I want to add some beauty while sticking with my budget.

I love that I get to share this kooky, messy, magic hobby with you all 💕

If you feel like you would like to join, we’re meeting on zoom each Friday at 12 (PST), with a different theme each week! In the studio, you will find a long table (seating 6-8) and organized shelving. In the adjoining room, there is a couch, chair + floor cushions. Ideal for art therapy, family therapy, youth counselling (8+) and somatic therapy.

This space is PACKED with resources and amenities that will help your clients feel comfortable. Amenities include: access to shared art + play supplies, sandtray, tea station, blankets, storage, WiFi, weekly cleaning and more. Much care has been taken to create a trauma-informed space.

All you need to do is show up, and tidy when you leave.

Availability starting April 15: Tuesday + Thursday MORNINGS ONLY until 1 pm. $450 monthly rent.

This week I was meant to start hosting an art therapy group, and I was disappointed to see that I didn’t get any sign ups. The Internet is my only co-worker, aiding me in building and promoting myself. And when it doesn’t work how I want it to, I question everything. I struggle to identify what I should post, how I should word it, what ads to buy, when to update my website, who I should reach out to for networking.

How often should I remind people that I am accepting new clients or hosting new groups - do people actually care? What more can I say? How much do I give?

I want to share about my life, but sometimes my life doesn’t look how it “should”, and how many times can I really say “I’m disappointed and scared” before that gets tiring too?

I find myself getting caught in comparison.

I imagine an ideal version of self that has just the right amount of business savvy and authenticity. This ideal self fills up workshops and groups with ease. She has everything figured out. Everyone likes her. She has found the perfect balance.

The issue with this imagined ideal self is that she is balancing flawlessly on a hair-thin tightrope that is actually impossible to walk on in the real world. In the real world, all I can do is try.

When I feel trapped in feelings of “too much” and “not enough”, I need to remind myself that a real person cannot be defined by a single adjective.

If you have felt trapped in this comparison before, I see you. There is no such thing as perfectly balancing everything. There will be failure and disappointment and exhaustion and that is just real life. We cannot fault ourselves for simply being human.

Take a little break from the screen, step outside, breathe in the spring air. Remember that your humanness is so much more than you can ever convey on these all-consuming pocket rectangles 🫶🏼

A lot of the art that I make in a week, I make with therapy clients so it’s fun to branch out once in a while and do my own personal art like slow embroidery and floral sketching ☺️
